One of the most common mistakes I see is garage door tracks covered in grease or heavy oil.
It might seem logical—after all, moving parts need lubrication, right?
Not in this case.

The tracks are there to guide the rollers/curtain. Applying grease or lubrication to the tracks creates a sticky surface that attracts dust, dirt, leaves and other debris. Over time, this build-up can actually make the door operate less smoothly and increase wear.

If your garage door is noisy, the tracks are usually not the cause.

The parts that may require lubrication are the moving components such as:

  • Hinges

  • Bearings

  • Springs (lightly)

  • Roller bearings (depending on the roller type)

The tracks themselves should simply be kept clean and dry.

If your garage door has become noisy or isn't running smoothly, it's often a sign that it needs servicing rather than more grease.
