Sectional Garage Door Rail Failure – Poor Fixings Caused Wall Damage

In this case, the sectional garage door rail was completely pulled out of the wall, and in the process it also damaged the surrounding brickwork.

What Went Wrong

The failure was caused by a combination of installation issues:

  • The rail was fixed into soft mortar instead of solid brick

  • Only short wall plugs with undersized screws were used

  • The motor setup was applying an excessive load at this fixing point over time

Individually, each of these issues reduces holding strength. Together, they eventually led to complete failure.

Over time, this was not a question of if it would fail - only when.

The Result

As the system operated daily, the load concentrated on the weakest fixing point.

Eventually:

  • The rail pulled away from the wall

  • The surrounding brickwork broke away with it

  • The door support system lost structural integrity

What Was Done to Fix It

To restore a safe and long-term solution, the following works were carried out:

  • Installed deep chemical anchors into solid structural material

  • Stabilised the damaged brickwork

  • Re-secured the rail with properly rated fixings

  • Adjusted motor force settings to reduce unnecessary strain on the system

Outcome

The rail is now properly supported and fixed to structural material, not mortar or surface layers.

The system is now:

  • Structurally secure

  • Properly aligned

  • Operating within safe load limits

  • Built for long-term reliability
