A Smarter Way to Automatically Open Your Gate


Over the years, I've installed several virtual loop sensors for clients who wanted their gate to open automatically as their vehicle approaches.
The goal is simple: seamless, hands-free access without needing to press a remote control.
Traditionally, this has been achieved using an underground inductive loop. While loop detectors can work very well, they require cutting the driveway to install the loop cable, and faults can become difficult and costly to locate if the cable or joints are damaged.
Some systems rely on optical sensors for vehicle detection, but these can be affected by fog, dew, heavy rain, insects, animals, or moving vegetation, sometimes resulting in unwanted gate openings.
Virtual loop sensors use radar technology to detect approaching vehicles while ignoring most other movement. Because they're mounted above ground, installation is less invasive and future maintenance is much simpler.
They can be an excellent solution when:
You want hands-free gate operation.
Cutting the driveway isn't practical.
An existing loop detector has failed.
You want reliable vehicle detection with fewer false triggers.
Every property is different, so the best solution depends on the driveway layout, gate location and how the gate is used.
